Sleep Training Update

It’s been almost 2 weeks since we had the breakthrough with Henry’s new sleeping arrangement. The changes have been remarkable. Prior to this, we had to rock him, put him down, wait til he was in deep sleep and sneak out – only to repeat all these again an hour later.

These days, he’s like a different child. He now sleeps from 7pm to 6:30/7am. We will put on a night light while we give him his last bottle (with Bunny in his arms), put him down in his cot (awake), switch off the light and walk out. He will put himself to sleep and will stay asleep for hours. And when he wakes in the middle of the night, he will quietly put himself back to sleep (or sometimes we can hear him talking to himself before going back to sleep). The most remarkable thing is: sometimes he will be awake at 6am but he will remain quiet until he can hear us getting out of bed!

Even though he has been down with a nasty cold and ear infection for the past 10 days, he is still sleeping through the night.

I’ve been getting emails from some of you asking to elaborate on the sleep training techniques but I seriously can’t explain the sudden change. He literally just started sleeping through the night at the flick of the night light switch. All I can think of is that being in complete darkness makes him realise it’s night time and he is supposed to be asleep (or at least quiet).

For what it’s worth, here is Henry’s routine if anyone is interested:

7am – wake up and bottle (210-240ml)

7:30am – back to sleep (or if he’s not in the mood, I just let him stay awake and play while I make myself a cup of coffee and unload the dishwasher)

8:30am – breakfast

9:30am – morning nap (depending on whether he went back to sleep after his first bottle, it can be 45mins  – 1.5 hrs)

11am – bottle (210ml)

12pm – lunch

1:30-2pm – nap (usually an hour or an hour and a half)

3-3:30pm – bottle (120ml)

5pm: Dinner

6pm Play time with Dad and Bath

6:45pm Bottle and bed

P.S. we are now working on pushing back the bedtime to 7pm as he’s been waking up around 5:30am from hunger/thirst (he’d go right back to sleep but I can’t!)

Good luck to you all. xx
