Kitzbuhel – between heaven and earth

Kitzbuhel – the best known ski resort of Austria is about 1.5 hour’s drive from Munich and 2 hours from Salzburg.

This small medieval town is more than a ski resort/spa country where the rich and famous Bavarians/Austrians holiday. The Strief slope is often regarded as one of the toughest downhill runs in the world. I once heard a professional skier said, “you really are just an amateur until you have conquered the slopes of Kitzbuhel.”

To me, Kitzbuhel’s sheer beauty is worth a visit. Its mountainous terrain and historic Tyrolian architecture are unique in its own right. While Kitzbuhel is frequented all year round by the wealthy, it’s not a place to see and be seen. No one is trying to impress you or is ready to be impressed by the fur coat you don. Holiday goers here are understatedly elegant – diamonds are not a girl’s best friend here. But everywhere you go, people are smartly dressed in functional designer clothes made to the highest standards.

Kitzbuhel is also known for its hip bars and vibrant night life. We didn’t really go into town after dark as we want to make full use of our €450 a night resort.

driving into the village of Kitzbuhel

we spent many cosy evenings sitting by the fire in the bar with our gluhwein

the indoor heated pool within the day spa of our resort.

the ladies change room in the spa area has two tanning beds

this is where i spent hours swimming/ soaking in the morning. .There is something magical about being in a heated outdoor pool watching snowflakes falling from the sky

this is where i started my mornings – at the hotel restaurant enjoying the most impressive breakfat spread i’ve seen (and i have seen a lot!” There are three racks of bread rolls , 6 types of yoghurt, an omeltte/egg station, a cheese and cold cut station, a cream cheese station, a juice/giurmet tea station, etc. i often found myself having a three course breakfast while i was at A-Rosa. and eased off ,y caloric intake for the rest of the day.

Here we go, we ‘re here!

me at the gondola in the village. A-Rosa offers a free shutltle service between the resort and the town centre

this is where residents hang out between 2-3:30pm. when they come back from skiing

me on an amazingly mild day, having a cup of complimentary herbal tea with sweets

At the recommendation of our concierge, we booked this restaurant for dinner. This is my favourite restaurant in Kitzbuhel – Hostaria iat Hotel Resch . I come from Melbourne – we’re really spoilt when it comes to italian food but this one is truly sensational and rather reasonably priced.

this is my favourite homeware store in the village. i wanted to buy everything! A must- visit store in Kitzbuhel.
